Jewelry Development Process Part 2 –Sample Development

As a supplier and manufacturer of fast fashion of 28 years, working with small retailers to large chain stores, we’ve come to see inspiration from buyers all over the world. From pictures sent via fax machine to samples shipped from stores in London to even references being sent via Instagram message, we bring it all together to source what we can and make what we know within the fastest time possible.

Given the task of making a custom design with “similar components” to the general theme of “bohemian fashion earring” is something ODES can accomplish within a quick timeframe of 1-2 weeks. Pooling our network of suppliers and knowing where to source at competitive pricing, we understand enough about our client’s styles to the point of making multiple styles according to brand identity and theme.

When it comes to making pre-production samples from scratch for a first time buyer, we take a detailed and carefully attentive approach to fully understand customer product requirements head on.

Here are just two options that we can go into for pre-production samples

Self Assembled Jewelry Samples

If you intend to design your own jewelry using ODM parts from our factory, we save you the time and headache of testing new designs by offering you basic component parts, color charts or stone/bead charts for reference.

From these materials you can create self assembled samples which can than be returned back to us acting as Pre-Production Samples. This approach can save weeks, and enable you to test new designs in a highly cost efficient way.

Supplier Assembled Jewelry Samples

If you intend to base the design on our existing ODM samples, we encourage you to be overly clear over your technical specifications. This encompasses product and order terms over delivery and payment. Clear communication is crucial during the pre-production phase to reduce any risk of misunderstanding.

Key Communication

When it comes to OEM, the first sample batch is typically not an exact rendering. We encourage our clients to provide specific feedback on each detail, in a structured format.

  1. Photograph all quality issues and the details that you are satisfied with. This is to provide us with more reference points and can prevent new problems from subsequent sample batches.
  2. Create a document listing all quality issues that must be resolved, including the photos detailing them.
  3. At receipt of document, we will explain how we can resolve the issue on the next sample revision.
  4. If there are problems that occur due to lack of technical capability, we may require that you tweak your design and quality requirements.
  5. At the second sample batch, most quality issues should be eliminated. If there are minor issues, please repeat the documentation and feedback procedure.
  6. Process is repeated until revision with design, quality, and price is confirmed for both parties. This revision shall be fit for mass production and will serve as an exact replica of the mass produced product.

Overall, the sample development process is very unpredictable, especially when sourcing overseas, can be very time-consuming and costly. What was initially supposed to take a few weeks can suddenly take months, if sample defects or clear incompetency over colors and materials were mixed within orders. The key to prevent the sample development process from spiraling out of control, is communication between the buyer and the manufacturer.
